Everyone is familiar with feeling that moment of defeat when your paper gets mashed by an opponent's rock and you get stuck carrying the keg or buying the round of drinks. Ah, the beautiful game of Rock, Paper, Scissors. In 2005, the game was taken to the next level when Andrew Golder and Matti Leshem founded the USA Rock Paper Scissors League. The duo managed to bring structure and rules to the game, and there are now hundreds of leagues members found nationwide.
Three years later, the game is once again being taken to the next level; the political bandwagon. A new online version of the game, with the quirky name of Barack Paper Scissors, is available to be played exclusively at the league's web site. Barack Paper Scissors allows you to play as Presidential candidate Barack Obama against a host of competitors, such as his opponents John McCain and Hillary Clinton, as well as Governor Schwarzenegger, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and current president George W. Bush. To promote both the democratic process, as well as the well-known sport, players are able to bone up on their Rock Paper Scissors skills before this year's USARPS Bud Light Championship takes place. They can also register to vote by following a link available in the game.
Just because Obama's name happens to be in the title of the game, it doesn't mean the the league necessarily supports him in the Presidential race. If you plan on playing the game, you might want to know that the rules are a little bit different than you might be used to. According to the RPS website: "Unlike standard RPS play where victory is determined simply by beating your opponents throw, in Barack Paper Scissors, players will earn points based on their speed of play and their ability to win by throwing combinations like an "Avalanche" (three consecutive rocks) or "Confetti" (three papers in a row). However, no bonus points will be given for throwing a "Hanging Chad," which is an illegal move where a player claims to throw a paper, but does not complete their arm rotation. Registered members will be ranked on a leader board."
