No Longer an Oxymoron
She's a 21-year-old blond, blue-eyed California girl who listens to Jimi Hendrix, loves Mexican food and John Grisham novels, and dreams of driving a Dodge Viper.
Oh, and she's a pro golfer too.
Natalie Gulbis learned to play golf at the age of 4 when she would tag along with her dad on the Sacramento courses. She won her first tournament at 7, and by 10 was breaking par. Then at 14 she became the youngest player to qualify for an LPGA event (a record that was broken by 12-year-old Michelle Wie in 2002).
"I just love [golf]," she said in a recent ESPN interview. "I mean, you can play it all over the world. Every single day is different. You can never have the same shot twice. The competition is always different. Just when you think you've figured it out, it kind of throws you a curveball."
Kind of like she did to the world of women's golf. Not known for being in a sport filled with beautiful women, Gulbis was an immediate sensation when she stepped onto the green. (Who wouldn't want to follow her for 18 holes?)
She also recently became the first LPGA virtual player in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004 videogame.
Although she hasn't won an actual LPGA tournament yet, she's come close a half-dozen times (her best finish was a T-5 at the 2002 Shoprite LPGA classic), proving she's no Anna Kournakova of golf
