How do you get a movie made about your life staring Renee Russo, Al Pacino and Matthew McConaughey? Ask Brandon Lang. His story recently hit the big screen in Two for the Money, an adrenaline-charged thriller about the sexy, high-stakes world of sports betting.
In an interview last week with Double Agent, Brandon shared some of his insights. The most critical part of "handicapping" or breaking down the point spread of a professional game is managing your emotions, advises the oddsmaker with one of the most historic winning streaks in the industry. It's your ego that gets you into trouble by allowing you to think you don't need to put in the work.
It was in the midst of his six year winning streak that Brandon decided what he was doing would make a fascinating movie. However, he understood one thing. He would have to leave the business to get this movie made. Brandon moved to Los Angeles and networked his way in as a caddy at the prestigious Riviera Country Club knowing he would caddy for a director, writer, or producer that would make Brandon's movie a reality.
After caddying for the likes of President Clinton, Jack Nicholson, and Tom Cruise, along came Dan Gilroy, who was pitched the movie idea of a lifetime after a sixty foot putt. Six years later, with Matthew McConaughey playing Brandon Lang, Brandon's story was told in a major motion picture that played in theatres nationwide called "Two For the Money."
Brandon recently moved back to Las Vegas and is engaged to be married. Of course, Double Agent couldn't help asking how Brandon met his wife. On a Friday in mid-August, it looked like the movie deal was going to fall through. He just crawled under the sheets thinking he'd just blown eight years of his life. Then Monday morning, he got a call that Al and Matthew were on board and everything had been worked out! He drove straight to Vegas where a friend took him out to the nightclub Light to celebrate. He saw his future wife, walked right up to her and grabbed her. Obviously, not a bad gamble at all.
The DVD for Two For the Money will be released by Universal Studios on Tuesday, January 17th. Besides Pacino and McConaughey, the film stars also one of our favorites - Mr. Jeremy Piven.
