You probably already know Dave Chappelle from his hilarious Comedy Central show, the Dave Chappelle Show. If you do, then you'll be excited to hear that he's hitting the big screen on March 3rd with his movie, Block Party. Trust us, it's beyond hilarious.
Block Party is a live show, in fact, a documentary of sorts. It was shot on location last year and follows Chappelle as he throws a huge block party and performance in Brooklyn. Chappelle traveled around looking for guests, handing out tickets as he went along. The lucky guests got to travel to New York and see a performance featuring such acts as Erykah Badu, Common, Mos Def, The Fugees, Dead Prez, Jill Scott, and Kanye West, just to name a few. Chappelle himself said, "This is the concert I always wanted to see!"
Everything was captured on film by filmmaker, and Academy Award winner, Michel Gondry, along with cinematographer Ellen Kuras. Here are some interesting facts that you can impress your date with before the movie starts.
Anyone who attended didn't know exactly what they were going to see. They had to register online, and then were told to meet in Chinatown at a secret location. They were picked up there and bussed to the performance, all the time its location was kept a secret. Also, most of the acts playing the performance were also kept a secret from the guests.
There was free admission to the performance.
The whole project was funded by Dave Chappelle himself. Yep, he used his own money.
Lastly, in case some of you seemed surprised to hear The Fugees were on the line-up, it was the first time since 1997 that the group, featuring Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, and Pras, performed together.
Even if you've never seen Dave Chappelle, you gotta check this out. It's one of the most unique films to come along in awhile.
