It looks like Disney World isn't the happiest place on earth anymore. Sorry Mickey but according to a new report just released by a British scientist, Denmark is the happiest country in the world!
Adrian White is a social psychologist at the University of Leicester located in central England. His study was based on data from both 178 countries and 100 global studies from organizations such as the United Nations and the World Health Organization. White recently told Reuters, 'We're looking much more at whether you are satisfied with your life in general. Whether you are satisfied with your situation and environment.'
Main factors such as health, wealth, and education were what White said affected happiness. He also said that his research produced the first 'world map of happiness.' Apparently, Denmark came in number one, followed closely by countries Switzerland, Iceland, Austria, and the Bahamas.
Those found at the bottom of the list were the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe, and the most unhappy -- Burundi. The US came in at a strong 23rd! It would seem that smaller countries tend to be a little happier because there is a stronger sense of collectivism and then you also have the aesthetic qualities of a country.
White also added, 'We were surprised to see countries in Asia scoring so low, with China 82nd, Japan 90th, and India 125th. These are countries that are thought as having a strong sense of collective identity which other researchers have associated with well-being.
White has admitted that collecting data in this manner isn't an exact science, although he did say that the measures he used were reliable when it came to predicting health and welfare outcomes.
