According to a recent report, many Americans are lacking so much sleep that it is resulting in problems in their marriages, making mistakes at work, and even going without sex.
The National Sleep Foundation's poll found that 75 percent of adults often have a symptom of a sleep problem such as frequent waking during the night or even snoring. But not many believe that they have a sleep problem and most ignore it.
In a statement, Foundation chief executive Richard Gelula said, "Half of the country sleeps pretty well--the other half has problems."
But what is to blame for this problem? Of the more than 1,500 adults surveyed, it was found that 87 percent usually watched TV in the hour before going to bed, 47 percent usually had sex, and 64 percent read.
"Only about one-half of respondents are able to say on most nights, 'I had a good night's sleep'," said the Foundation, who issues regular reports showing Americans don't get enough sleep, in a statement.
Close to a quarter of those people in a marriage of relationship said they had sex less often or had even lost interest in sex because they are too sleepy.
It is recommended by the Foundation that adults get between seven to nine hours of sleep per night, but the survey itself found that Americans get an average of 6.9 hours.
Of those people surveyed, 60 percent of drivers did admitted to haven driven in a drowsy state in the past year and 4 percent said they were involved in an accident or near-accident due to the fact they were tired or dozing while driving.
Close to 30 percent of employed adults stated that they missed work, made mistakes, or missed activities because of sleep-related issues in the past three months.
77 percent complained that their partner has a sleep-related problem, which is usually snoring.
"In my practice, I've found when couples are forced to sleep apart because of one partner's sleep problems, it often has a terrible effect on the relationship," stated Dr. Meir Kryger, a director at the Foundation and also the director of the Sleep Disorder Centre at St. Boniface Hospital Research Centre at the University of Manitoba in Winnepeg.
More than one third of the people who described themselves as poor sleepers said their intimate relationships were affected because they are often too sleep, which was compared to 8 percent of good sleepers.
