A new luxury hotel in Boston might have you singing a different set of prison blues the next time you think about spending a night in jail. At the Liberty Hotel in Boston, spending the night in jail is a luxury most of us can't even afford. After a $150-million renovation, the old Charles Street jail, at the foot of Boston's stately Beacon Hill neighborhood, has been transformed into an opulent hotel that caters to guests like Mick Jagger, Eva Mendes, and Meg Ryan.
Architects for the Liberty Hotel took great pains to preserve the history of the jail while trying not to remind people too much of its dark past. In their 5-year effort they managed to maintain many of the jails original elements. Eighteen of the 298 rooms are built in the original jail, which feature the original brick walls. At one of the hotel restaurants, called Clink, patrons look through original cell door bars while ordering their gourmet meals.
The Charles Street jail is full of history; many of its old clientele have secured their places in history. Bill Baird, an activist who was locked up for 37 days in 1967 for breaking a Massachusetts law prohibiting the distribution of contraceptives to unmarried people is just one of the many ex-prisoners. Baird's arrest led to a landmark 1972 Supreme Court decision legalizing birth control for unmarried people.
Guests of the Liberty Hotel can enjoy all the amenities of a luxury hotel, from flat panel HD-LCD screens and high speed internet to a 24-hour fitness center and river views. In the 156-year-old stone building the lowest priced rooms start at $319 a night, while the presidential suite will put you under a whopping $5,500.
