Have you ever wondered what it would be like to ride in a car that drives itself? Thanks to Stanford University scientist Sebastian Thrun, you may soon be able to find out. Thrun has built a car that drives itself.

The car, nicknamed Stanley, drove on its own across 132 of desert last summer. It was a course laid out by the Defense Department, and Stanley won a $2 million prize for the race.

Sensors on top of the car are what make Stanley go, while cameras, lasers, and GPS equipment help to feed the info it needs to laptops in the trunk.

Stanley has been programmed to be not only safer, but also more considerate than most drivers, so road rage isn't an issue. In fact, he can't even honk his own horn!

Thrun figures that within the next 25 years self-driving cars will be the norm. His next endeavor is to have a robot car drive itself from San Francisco to Los Angeles in October 2007.
