According to event organizers, a new world surfing record was recently been broken. This happened off of the coast of South Africa when 73 surfers simultaneously caught and rode the same wave. Paul Botha, a surfer who also helped to organize the record-breaking event that took place at Muizenberg Corner located in Cape Town recently told AFP, 'We have smashed the record.
Botha also told SAFM public radio, 'We have registered the claim and got a claim number. All we need now is to get the footage edited and send it off [to the Guinness Book of Records].
Although 73 surfers rode the wave simultaneously, over 300 people actually participated in the event that was organized as a fundraiser. The surfers involved think they have beaten the previous record, in which 44 surfers rode the same wave in May off the west coast of Ireland. As of right now, there is also a similar attempt by 53 surfers in Bali that is being verified.
