When you think about tailgating, it usually involves parking your jalopy in the sports complex's parking lot, a lot of alcohol, a bunch of buddies, a grill covered with man food, and maybe even a drunken fight or two. If this sounds like your idea of heaven, then check out urbantailgate.com, a web site that brings together people who love the same team to watch their sport of choice in local bars and pubs.
Two guys named Stroker (yes, Stroker) and Chris came up with the web site's quirky idea. They describe it as "the brainchild of 28 Bud Lights and 8 shots of Jack Daniels." Their goal was to create a site that can connect sports fans who love the same sport and the same team at different local bars. And, if there isn't already a bar that has been deemed as "Yankees Central" then you can go on the site and, as they say, MAKE some bar yours.
Using the site is easy, there are just three steps:
The first thing you need to do is sign up and pick your favorite teams. Yep, any team, any sport, any season. You can probably even tell them that you just can't miss any tennis events featuring Maria Sharapova, or the annual WingBowl competition. You'll get weekly email updates letting you know where to watch and what special events may be happening.
Once you've gotten that out of the way, you go to your favorite team's page to find out where the fans hang out. The site won't actually tell you where to go, but will tell you which places are the best for fans like you. You can even tell them where you'll be so other fans can find you.
The last step is making friends with other fans. You can watch these new friends to see where they will be so you can meet up with them to watch your team. You can even let them know where you'll be so they can find you, if they decide to throw caution to the wind and disregard the restraining order they filed against you for following them to the bar.
The good thing about this web site is that all sports are covered. The site is always monitoring who's where and on what days so that places with better attendance records stay at the top of the list. The bad news is that, as of right now, this service is only available for fans living in New York City. But, it is soon to be heading to your city in no time.
