Sharapova Shocks with Wimbledon Win
Anna Kournikova used to be the hottest thing in tennis. That is until 17-year-old Maria Sharapova came storming onto the scene. The 6-foot Siberian beauty is not only a knockout, but she's actually really good at tennis. So good, in fact, she just became the 3rd youngest woman ever to win a Wimbledon championship.
But the comparisons to Kournikova still keep coming.
"Being a tennis babe doesn't do it for me," Sharapova said in a recent interview. "If that's what people are hoping for, then I'm afraid they're going to be disappointed. Of course I like to look good on court, but I'm out there to play tennis, not to look sexy."
She saves looking sexy for when she's in front of the cameras as a model for IMG, the agency that handles superstars like Heidi Klum and Tyra Banks.
Even though she's got the looks, Sharapova hates being compared to that other blond. And she has good reason. Sharapova's already won three WTA tournaments, including Birmingham a few weeks ago. Kournikova, whose career seems more closely tied to endorsements than tennis, did not win one.
Sharapova has been a hard-nosed tennis player since she was 7, when she showed up uninvited at Nick Bollettierei's Tennis Academy and wowed the instructors with her first stroke.
Her off-court interest include jazz dancing, fashion, reading Sherlock Holmes novels, and watching her favorite movie, Pearl Harbor.
