From the writer who brought us Donnie Darko, Richard Kelly's new film THE SOUTHLAND TALES is guaranteed to be funny as hell. With a veritable cornucopia of big names and comedic players, SOUTHLAND TALES takes place in a near-future version of LA in 2008, where the city is on the brink of "social, economic and environmental disaster." Who knows what this means exactly, but here are some choice tidbits concerning the film's plot: SNL star Cheri Oteri is set to play a "villainous lesbian body-builder," Sarah Michelle Gellar will be a porn star called Krysta Now, Sean William Scott (of DUKES OF HAZARD) will play a police officer (of all things) who is stuck in the midst of conspiracy, and "The Rock" will play a Hollywood action star who is stricken with amnesia. Really do I need to say anymore?

In case I do, there are other interesting plans to be undertaken by director Richard Kelly. In the months before the film's release, an expanded version of THE SOUTHLAND TALES will be released as a nine-part interactive experience "prequel saga" to appear in graphic novel form (over six separate 100-page editions, to be released over six months). Each will be written by Kelly, and will be coupled with a massive website that hopes to be the most elaborate website ever made for a feature film. Kelly is calling the entire fiasco a "multimedia experience."

To top it off, musician Moby (who is a huge DONNIE DARKO fan) is apparently going to work on the score for the film.

THE SOUTHLAND TALES will be out next year, and is sure not to disappoint.
