Alan Mills, a Wimbledon referee, wants to crack down on the grunting that tennis players do.
Maria Sharapova was recently recorded by one tabloid's unofficial "gruntometer" at 101.2 decibels. As loud as a police siren, it is said to have broken previous records.
Mills has told Reuters, "It is something I would like to see stopped."
After being labeled by the Sun newspaper as "Bawl-Breaker," Sharapova was asked at a press conference if she thought we was being loud. "You always ask me the same questions. I don't pay much attention to that and I never have and I never probably will," she responded.
Serena Williams was quoted as saying, "I am going to carry on grunting. It's not my business to control what people think."Mills has said that the two biggest complaints he gets in letters from Wimbledon spectators are about the players' grunting and spitting.Notices have been put up about spitting, but he is still working on the grunting. "I think the message is getting through. But the grunting has got progressively worse over the years. I would really like it curbed. I am sure coaches can play their part."
He also added, "Opponents have to complain first for the chair umpire to do something. We have to monitor the situation carefully."
