It is hard to find a job that doesn't stress you out, unless maybe you are in the porn business. However, it has been found that stress caused by your job can up your risk for heart disease, which can cause you to kick the bucket sooner. Ten thousand British workers were studied over the course of 12 years and the results were alarming, but not surprising considering how many of us are slaves to our jobs.
In the study, workers were asked about the amount of control they have, what their demands are, if their days are hectic, and the amount of breaks that took from their busy work schedule. It seems that many were chronically stressed, and these stressed out workers were found to have 68 percent more of a risk for getting heart disease. The workers with major stress were also found to have a lower variable heart rate, which can cause for a weaker heart that functions poorly.
Although stress was a major factor for poor health, other reasons for some workers being unhealthy included drinking, smoking, not exercising, and eating foods that aren't healthy. So, what can you do to ensure that your job doesn't kill you? You can completely de-stress Office Space style and kick the crap out of your printer, or try some things that won't get you fired.
Take more breaks during the day to chat by the water cooler or go for a short walk around the building to clear your mind. Actually take your lunch hour (the whole hour) and brown bag it; You can control what you're eating, and you'll be surprised at how much money you save. Skip smoke breaks. Make your break times more productive--like say, heading to the fourth floor to check out the hottie from the HR department.
